60th Annual Lerwick Shetland Pony Show & Sale - Report by Pony Breeders of Shetland
Thursday 4th & Friday 5th October saw the 60th annual show and sale of registered pedigree Shetland ponies held at the Shetland Rural centre in Lerwick. There were 69 ponies entered and forward for the sale from the length and breadth of Shetland, on par with the number of entries in the two previous years, which was good to see.
The Pony Breeders of Shetland Association (PBSA) were delighted to welcome Mr Charles Seward from Carmarthen to judge at the Show on the Thursday evening. There was strong competition in all classes with the judge commenting particularly on the high quality of the foals he was seeing which was not common elsewhere.
The main show awards were hotly contested with Amanda Slater, Tresta, prevailing and taking overall show champion with her home bred 3 year old piebald filly Breckenlea Little Gift. Reserve Champion and Champion Foal at the Sale was taken by Bergli Stud and their standard black colt foal Bergli Valdi.
It’s our first year on the award scheme with my daughter Sophie and her Pony Tara. They have had great fun at a range of activities this year, including thoroughly enjoying the 10 mile Raby Castle Charity Ride last weekend in aid of the Great North Air Ambulance Service. Jane Richardson 🙂

We have reported on HOYS but how about this for something a little different from Dominique Schultz who was at NSW Horse of the year Show, Australia!!
Cleoranee Inspector owned by Kylie Dooley from Cleoranee Shetland Stud ridden by Dominique’s daughter Wynter & yes they had rain.... lots of rain
Due to the highs & lows of the D/E/S class at HOYS we can also now announce that Sharptor Bellisima with Grace Litherland not only picked up 10th place but also the highest mare and Bellisima & Libby Grota were the only shetland combination in the Junior M & M ridden on Sunday taking 9th place. What a special pony taking 3 different children into the arena from first ridden to open.
A lovely show report from Lel Mayfield about Supernova World Championships Arena UK. We can’t think of a better way to spend time with your granddaughter than showing your Shetlands ☺️
It really really was our last show for 2018. A VERY long but successful day at Supernova World Championships Arena UK. A much better shetland turnout than originally thought with very lovely ponies forward. Plumtree Bonanza 1st in Miniature 2/3 years. Coedgleision Polly 1st Miniature mare/gelding 4+ and 2nd Watson Chickpea. Beeftub Bell Emileo 5th /11 in very strong standard 4+ Watson Chickpea 2nd in Open Piebald and Emily was Best SPSBS Junior handler and 2nd in Shetland/Miniature horse Junior handler age group. There was no miniature or junior SPSBS championship just an overall champion and reserve which went to two beautiful standards. Also best gelding was also Res Champ. Thank you to Amanda Breakell and team. Photographs by Amy Griffiths. Brilliant as usual.
We have had so many enquires in the last few weeks about our fabulous new Inhand Awards Scheme from people who were unaware of it or didn't quite understand it that it seems we must apologise for not advertising our Scheme properly.
We are delighted to have already received more entries than we imagined in it's first year but to make up for not reaching everyone clearly we have accepted some late entries from those who have enquired and feel it is only fair to also extend this opportunity to everyone (points will be taken from the beginning of the 2018 Awards year) and to show you the gorgeous prizes all sponsored by Native Pony Bridles.
The Scheme entry is £15 (additional ponies or schemes £10) which gives that pony entry into all of the relevant 13 categories.
The Overall winner with the most points on any one category will receive a beautifully hand crafted, finest Sedgwick English leather Bridle from Native Pony Bridles and a gorgeous banner sash which can be hung anywhere with pride.
Gorgeous Pom Pom Rosettes made exclusively to our own design with category printed on tails & Personalised Certificate to 3rd place in each Category.
Points are accrued from afflliated Shows - SPSBS, SSADL, VHS, CHAPS & BSPA and there is also an Unaffiliated Category.
Points can be entered from 6 shows under 5 different Judges.
You can join through our website by clicking here or by sending £15 to firstname.lastname@example.org and dropping us a fb pm or email.
When your pony might be small but is winning big.

Then they went onto win the team showing along with three others, end of season supreme points champion!!! for the NJH Riding Club and was points champion for concours, family pony, best turned out, walk & trot, m&m, open, ridden, home produced, ridden veteran, lead rein rider, mini rider also points reserve champion for in hand veteran and in hand Shetland.
They have qualified for STARS with NJH RC, best turned out, ridden veteran, young handler and lead rein M & M, iona (Gorsehill Iona), is isabella’s best friend and so good with her, she’s still enjoying keeping busy at 18yrs old.
Drum roll please for these amazing photographs of Waulkmill Redstart, (owned by Alison Bromwich) and Dakota Keys who we can now reveal are the duo who were actually 3rd in the D/E/S class on Thursday at Hoys.
Due to a transposition of competitor numbers Red wasn't in the final pull in the ring but when the marks were revealed later the mistake was apparent and Red and Dakota were awarded their rightful rosette and given an amazing individual photo opportunity in the Top Spec Arena yesterday which Red certainly made the most of and quite rightly too.
Anna Chaplin who sent us these gorgeous photographs said "We feel so incredibly grateful to HOYS for what they did for us yesterday, they made a 13yr old on her first visit extremely happy and have given her a very special "one off" memory! the crowd were very supportive and I am thankful to all that made it possible."
Watch this space for another personal story and more information in the next week on this super pair who have set a new record this year.

Great to hear that the ponies from Foula have made it out for this year's sale. A break in the weather and favorable sea conditions have allowed them to make the journey over to the Shetland Mainland. They are now enjoying some chill out time in the mart ahead of Friday's sale. With HOYS posts everywhere you turn at the moment we have ione with a difference with a flashback from one of the trail blazers, the Ulverscroft stud & Claylands Calypso ridden by Natalie Greasley-Woodward.
New laws surrounding equine identification came into force in England today (1 October).
Defra’s new equine identification regulations legally require every horse, pony and donkey to be microchipped and possess a valid UK passport, with details stored in the Central Equine Database (CED).
All horses born after 30 June 2009 are already required to be microchipped. Owners of horses born before this date will have two years from today to get their equines microchipped.

A bit of Shetland Magic
Maisie hadn’t sat on a Shetland until earlier this season & a shetland wasn’t something Mum Samantha had even considered but then Hackamore Holly Blue aka Alice arrived in their lives. They have had a great season.
This is them at Parson Drove Horse Show, Winning the Lead Rein Class and taking Reserve Ridden Champion!
They also came 4th in the Young Handler (18 years & Under) with the top 3 being teenagers and Winning the Standard Shetland Class! “Very proud as always of this pair” said mum Samantha.
We’re super proud too, can’t wait to see what the future holds. Well done Maisie & the super special Alice.
